Journal of Critical Realism invites expressions of interest for the volunteer positions of associate editor and membership to the editorial committee.
Submissions expected by 2 February 2025 to o.ozmen.14@ucl.ac.uk.
Journal of Critical Realism (JCR) is the journal of the International Association for Critical Realism, established in 1997 to foster the discussion, propagation and development of critical realist approaches to understanding and changing the world. It provides an international and interdisciplinary forum for scholars wishing to promote realist emancipatory philosophy and social theory informed by critical realism, and for those who want to engage with such approaches. The journal publishes research articles, review essays, review symposia, book reviews, roundtable discussions, debates and interviews that relate to critical realism in a significant way. It is committed to encouraging work that engages with all phases of the philosophy of critical realism: original or basic critical realism, dialectical critical realism, and the philosophy of metaReality.
We are seeking expressions of interest by individuals at any career stage with demonstrable scholarship in the field for membership to the Editorial Committee or to serve as an Associate Editor. Interest may be expressed for either position or both. Both are volunteer positions. Those appointed to these positions will be expected to serve for approximately three years (2025-2027), which may lead to additional terms.
We recognise the importance of expanding the diversity of contributions to critical realism and thus encourage applications by individuals from social groups and identities that are underrepresented in academia.
Description of Roles:
1) Editorial Committee Member
Editorial committee members will help the editors by partaking in review processes and offering critical input and suggestions for the general direction of the journal. Prospective members should have a sound understanding of critical realism and be open to engaging with submissions across broad disciplinary and theoretical traditions. Positions on the editorial committee are also open to early-career academics with a demonstrable scholarship in critical realism.
Main responsibilities:
Being inclined to often accept ‘peer review’ invitations from the editors to conduct detailed, fair, and timely delivered reviews of submissions in their own areas of specialisation
Occasionally helping the editors with ‘desk review’ decisions by providing preliminary assessments of the suitability of (anonymized versions of) submissions to be sent to peer review
Helping the editors in finding suitable peer reviewers
Attending at least 2 of 4 online meetings per year to discuss issues related to the journal
Promoting the journal across their academic network
2) Associate Editor
The associate editor will have a greater hands-on role supporting the editor in pursuing the mission of JCR and managing the editorial process. Applicants should be organised and committed to following through on agreed tasks according to decided timelines. They should have a strong understanding of critical realism and be its advocate. They should be open to contributions engaging with all phases of critical realist philosophy from a wide range of perspectives and assess them fairly on the basis of academic rigour and significance for the field even if these perspectives are not shared by them. This position is a pathway to consideration for a future appointment as the general editor or a co-editor of JCR. It would be helpful to indicate in the expression of interest if this pathway interests you or not.
Main responsibilities:
Working closely with the general editor (currently Onur Ozmen) and the other associate editor(s) (currently Karim Knio) by regularly attending online meetings and/or corresponding on matters related to the journal
Partaking in decision-making processes together with the editor and the other associate editor(s), including on the general direction of the journal
Managing peer review cycles of assigned submissions and making decisions on their publication
Upholding standards of scholarly rigour and ethics (in accordance with COPE guidelines) in their editorial practices
Promoting the journal across their professional network and soliciting contributions from suitable scholars
Contributing to copyediting
How to Apply:
Please send a CV and a brief expression of interest (no longer than 300 words) responding to this call and specifying the position(s) you are interested in, to Onur Ozmen, editor of JCR, at o.ozmen.14@ucl.ac.uk no later than 2 February, 2025.
